1 Editorial Mission

MealNutritionLab was founded to make nutritional information accessible, understandable, and practical for everyday decisions. We catalog and analyze nutrition data across 200+ restaurant chains and more than 33,000 standard foods to empower users with:

  • Comprehensive, itemized macronutrient and micronutrient breakdowns.
  • Interactive nutrition calculators (e.g., Calorie Deficit, Protein Intake, Daily Values).
  • A dynamic Meal Builder for calculating combined meal totals and customizable portions.
  • Side-by-side food and restaurant menu comparison tools.
  • Evidence-based educational articles explaining dietary principles in plain language.
Important Limitation: MealNutritionLab is an educational and digital information platform. We do not provide clinical diagnosis, individual medical prescriptions, or healthcare treatment plans.

2 Editorial Principles

Our work is guided by eight foundational editorial tenets:

Accuracy

All data entries are cross-referenced against authoritative primary disclosures and verified mathematically.

Transparency

We openly disclose our data sources, formulas, rounding logic, and verification dates on every relevant page.

Independence

No restaurant chain, food manufacturer, or advertiser pays for ranking placement or altered nutrition numbers.

Source Quality

We rely on official corporate documentation and government public databases, rejecting speculative blog data.

User-First Utility

Tools and guides are designed to answer specific dietary questions efficiently, without confusing jargon.

Clear Corrections

When recipe reformulations or typos occur, we audit the report against official documents and update prompt.

Responsible Communication

We avoid exaggerated claims, crash diet promotions, or sensationalized health promises.

No Paid Manipulation

Nutritional values are objective facts. They are never modified to favor commercial partnerships.

3 Source Standards & Hierarchy

To maintain data fidelity, MealNutritionLab follows a rigorous hierarchy of primary sources:

  1. Government & Public Authoritative Databases: USDA FoodData Central (Foundation Foods, SR Legacy, Survey Foods) for standard ingredients, whole foods, and baseline reference intakes.
  2. Official Restaurant Corporate Publications: Complete nutritional guides and allergen registers published directly by parent companies and corporate quality assurance teams.
  3. Official Manufacturer Specifications: Nutritional fact panels and disclosures directly issued by certified food manufacturers.
  4. Recognized Public Health Organizations: Dietary guidelines and physiological reference standards from established bodies (e.g., FDA, NIH, CDC, WHO) for contextual education.
  5. Secondary Sources: Only referenced when primary data is unavailable or undergoing confirmation, with clear labeling indicating the secondary nature of the reference.

We never fabricate official source URLs. When an official source document is not publicly accessible online, we disclose that the document is pending verification rather than substituting an unrelated link.

4 Nutrition Data Standards

Nutritional figures undergo structured normalization before ingestion:

  • Unit Normalization: Calories are recorded in kilocalories (kcal); macronutrients (protein, total carbohydrates, dietary fiber, sugars, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat) in grams (g); and micronutrients (sodium, cholesterol) in milligrams (mg).
  • Serving Size Baseline: Figures are indexed per official serving size, with weight in grams documented whenever disclosed by the brand.
  • Missing Values: When a restaurant does not report a specific nutrient (such as dietary fiber or potassium), that field is stored and displayed as unavailable / unlistedโ€”never automatically assigned zero.
  • Preparation & Regional Variances: Actual restaurant preparations may vary due to handcrafted assembly, seasonal supply changes, and regional suppliers. We explicitly document that our figures represent corporate baseline recipes.

5 Article Creation & Research Guidelines

All educational articles and dining guides published on MealNutritionLab must satisfy clear standards:

  • Clear User Purpose: Articles must address specific, practical consumer needs (e.g., low-sodium ordering, high-protein menu selections, balanced calorie deficits).
  • Evidence-Grounded: Recommendations are substantiated by mathematical data from our database or recognized dietary authorities (e.g., CDC, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health).
  • Absence of Sensationalism: We prohibit extreme language, unverified "miracle" diet claims, or promises of specific weight-loss timelines.
  • Regular Review: Guides are re-evaluated periodically to ensure referenced menu items remain available on current restaurant menus.

6 Human Review & Technology Transparency

MealNutritionLab uses purpose-built computational scripts to normalize units, index large USDA datasets, and calculate macro sums across combinations of foods. We are fully transparent about how technology supports our platform:

  • Calculators and comparison engines run deterministic mathematical models (e.g., Atwater macro energy checks, sum-of-parts arithmetic).
  • Data-driven summary statistics (such as average calories per category) are computed directly from stored numbers.
  • Articles, editorial guides, and source reviews are authored and edited by human contributors to ensure clarity, coherence, and contextual relevance.

7 Author & Contributor Standards

We strictly uphold transparent, truthful author attribution:

  • Every published guide identifies the primary author or researcher responsible for the content.
  • We never invent fictitious contributors, academic degrees, or unverified professional licenses.
  • Our Lead Nutrition Writer, Daisy Rose, is accurately represented in her capacity as an experienced nutrition writer, data researcher, and content editor.
  • Author profiles disclose background, topic areas, and direct public profile links.

8 Fact-Checking & Review Standards

We apply internal editorial and data verification workflows to all content:

We do not claim that content is "medically reviewed" or "dietitian approved" unless an individual holding active, verified credentials has conducted that specific review. Instead, our verification is accurately described as Internal Editorial Review and Data Integrity Fact-Checking against primary documentation.

9 Corrections Policy

When users or restaurant representatives identify potential discrepancies or outdated numbers:

  1. Discrepancy Logging: The item and reported value are logged in our internal audit tracker.
  2. Primary Source Verification: Our research team inspects the most recently published corporate disclosure or USDA record for that specific item.
  3. Database Revision: If a discrepancy or menu update is confirmed, records are updated across all related calculator engines, comparison tables, and restaurant menu pages.
  4. Audit Trail: Material adjustments are reflected in the page's verification date.

To report a discrepancy, please use our Contact Form.

10 Editorial Independence & Advertising Separation

MealNutritionLab maintains a strict separation between commercial operations and editorial evaluation:

  • Advertisements, sponsored links, or third-party networks do not influence nutrition data values, calculator outputs, or comparative rankings.
  • The presence of an advertisement on MealNutritionLab does not constitute an endorsement of the advertised product or service.
  • All advertising placements are clearly demarcated from editorial and reference content.

11 Update Timestamps & Maintenance

To ensure clarity around data freshness:

  • Published Date: Indicates when the article or guide was originally published.
  • Modified Date: Indicates when editorial or structural content was last revised.
  • Last Verified Date: Represents when the underlying restaurant or food nutrition dataset was last audited against primary corporate sources.

We do not artificially manipulate timestamps to feign freshness without substantive review.

12 Contact & Feedback

We welcome feedback from consumers, researchers, and food service organizations. For questions regarding our editorial standards, data methodology, or to submit feedback:
